Morris sweeps top honors at boys lacrosse banquet

Junior attackman Eli Morris, who spearheaded the South Meck boys' offense with a team-high 34 goals this season, won both team MVP and Offensive Player-of-the-Year honors at Wednesday night's boys lacrosse banquet at South Mecklenburg High School. Joining Morris on the awards podium were senior goalie Grayson Stricker (Defensive Player of the Year), freshman middie Daniel Nix (Rookie of the Year), senior longstick middie Hamed Osman (Most Improved Player) and sophomore middie Josh Neumann (Hustle Award).

The Sabre seniors presented coach Tim Murphy with a brand new pair of Nike basketball sneakers for helping the team post its best record since 2006. South finished the season at 6-10, with the highlight being a 10-8 win at home over top rival Butler, its first win over the Bulldogs in five seasons.

A special honor was handed out to four Sabre seniors—defenseman Alex Meyer, middie Chris Pesta, attackman Jordan Smith and Stricker—who earned their fourth varsity letter in lacrosse. Signed and given by Principal Maureen Furr and Athletic Director Kevin Hinson, the Sabre Pride Award is given to select South Meck students who have made a significant difference in the history of the school. The South lax senior foursome received the honor for "playing a vital role in keeping the men's lacrosse program alive during a critical time at South Mecklenburg High School as four-year varsity lettermen from 2007 to 2011."
